Hey, astronomers!

Rachel spotted what I'm pretty sure was a planet this evening, around 7:30. She even called it such. It was in the southern to southwestern sky. It seemed too bright to be a star, as there was still some residual light from the sun yet.

The big question: Which planet was it? And how did you find out?

I believe that was Jupiter. I googled "Michigan visible planets October"

My husband the astronomy buff advises you to get a star chart. :)

It was Jupiter, magnitude -1.50.

I use Stellarium, a "free open source planetarium for your computer".

We are doing astronomy this quarter - but haven't seen any planets! BTW, the star on the SC state flag is Venus, because it is so easily seen from our state.

I tagged you for a meme, BTW!
